Around the Americas

The Around the Americas (ATA) is a 14-month sailing expedition to circumnavigate North and South America on a 48-foot sailing vessel named ONE OCEAN. In 2009-2010, Captain Mark Schrader completed the route that this expedition will follow and now will do it again. The mission is to spread the vision of North and South America as ONE ISLAND and the oceans surrounding it as ONE OCEAN through collaboration and the sharing of crucial scientific research. The voyage will transit the Northwest Passage to Brazil's COP30 Climate Change Conference in November 2025. The crew, made up of educators, scientists, and sailors from the PNW, will then navigate around Cape Horn and sail along the west coast of South America before completing the 14-month circumnavigation back to Anacortes. The team will collaborate with the University of Victoria, Wood’s Hole Oceanographic Institution, The University of California, and The University of Washington’s Applied Physics Lab and will collect scientific data to help address humankind’s critical relationship with our ocean. An open education curriculum will be shared with the school districts in Skagit Valley, and the outreach component will be shared in English, Spanish, and Portuguese and at over 50+plus ports of call.
